Dick Cheney's Death Sparks Bipartisan Condolences, Silence from Trump

Former Vice President Dick Cheney passed away on Tuesday, sparking an outpouring of condolences from both sides of the political aisle. Despite the bipartisan respect, President Trump, who had a long-standing disdain for Cheney, has not addressed his death nor issued a presidential proclamation. The White House flags were lowered to half-staff, but no official statement was released.

Cheney, who served as vice president under George W. Bush, was a prominent figure in the Republican Party. His death has been mourned by many, including former political rivals. Federal laws dictate that flags should be flown at half-staff for 30 days following the death of a former vice president. However, President Trump, who extended the privilege of flying flags at half-staff at his discretion during his second term, has not issued a proclamation in this case.

Cheney's relationship with Trump was strained, to say the least. In 2022, Cheney released an ad criticizing Trump as a 'coward' and a threat to the republic, in support of his daughter Liz Cheney's reelection campaign. Trump, in turn, has publicly expressed his disdain for the Cheney family. Despite this, Vice President JD Vance has also not reacted to Cheney's death.

The White House offered a muted reaction to Cheney's death, with press secretary Karoline Leavitt simply noting that flags have been lowered to half-staff. The relationship between the Trump family and the Cheneys remains deeply antagonistic, with no public details indicating Trump's involvement or stance regarding Cheney's funeral. As the political landscape continues to evolve, the absence of a presidential statement on Cheney's death serves as a stark reminder of the deep divisions within the Republican Party.
