Dirk Löther takes helm of Thuringia's State Criminal Police Office after months-long vacancy

Dirk Löther has been named the new president of Thuringia's State Criminal Police Office (LKA). The appointment follows a five-month vacancy after his predecessor, Jens Kehr, retired in February 2025. Interior Minister Georg Maier announced the decision, highlighting Löther's long-standing experience in law enforcement.

Löther's career in policing began in 1990 with the criminal police in Erfurt. Over the decades, he has held various leadership roles, including acting vice president of the State Police Directorate. His deep institutional knowledge of the LKA and its operations was a key factor in his selection.

The official handover ceremony took place with senior officials in attendance, including Frank Hüttemann, head of Division 4 at the Thuringian Ministry of the Interior. Minister Maier praised Löther's expertise and stressed the importance of maintaining public trust in the police. Thuringia's force remains one of the most respected institutions among citizens. While the Interior Ministry has not outlined specific crime-fighting priorities, a newly formed commission met for the first time today. Its purpose is to clarify future strategies, though no further details have been released.

Löther now leads the LKA with a mandate to uphold consistency and forward-thinking policies. His appointment comes at a time when public safety remains a top concern for the state. The ministry has placed its confidence in his ability to guide the organisation effectively.
