Dog Tax in Luenen to be Significantly Increased: Protests Expected

Lünen’s city council will vote on a sharp rise in dog taxes this Thursday. The proposed changes would see annual fees jump from €108 to €156 for a single pet. Critics argue the increase is excessive and could push some owners to give up their animals.

Under the new plan, the cost for one dog would climb by €48 per year. Those with two dogs would pay over €200 per animal, up from the current €120. The council expects the changes to bring in an extra €300,000 annually.

An online petition against the hike has already collected around 1,500 signatures. Meanwhile, about 200 dog owners intend to protest outside the council meeting before the vote. The tax rise is part of a broader increase in local charges.

Opponents describe the move as unfair and warn it may lead to more abandoned pets. The council has not yet responded to the backlash.

The vote on Thursday will decide whether the higher fees come into force. If approved, owners will face steeper costs from next year. The city has not announced any exceptions or support measures for affected residents.
