Dormagen Honors Werner Endres with New Stele for His Iconic Fountain Legacy
A new stele has been unveiled in Dormagen to honour Werner Endres, the creator of the city's iconic Endres Fountain. The tribute comes a year after his passing in 2022, with family members joining local officials at the ceremony. Mayor Erik Lierenfeld praised Endres as a devoted citizen whose legacy remains deeply tied to the community. Werner Endres designed the fountain to reflect Dormagen's unity, with 16 basalt columns symbolising each of the city's districts. Its flowing lines trace the path of the Rhine, illustrating how the river links the neighbourhoods together. Located at the corner of Römerstraße and Marktstraße, the fountain has long stood as a local landmark.
Endres moved to Dormagen in 1965 to work at Bayer AG and later served on the city council for over 40 years. In 2004, his contributions were formally recognised when he received the city's honorary ring. His widow, Elisabeth Endres-Michel, spoke at the ceremony, describing how Dormagen was far more than just a home to her late husband. The City Council further cemented the fountain's importance by declaring it an official 'homeland landmark' in March 2023. The ceremony also included Endres' grandson, Joshua, who joined his grandmother in paying respects to the late designer's enduring impact on the city.
The stele now stands as a permanent reminder of Werner Endres' dedication to Dormagen. His fountain continues to represent the city's connection to the Rhine and its districts. The tribute ensures that his influence on local culture and identity will be remembered for years to come.
