Dortmund Police Launch Trust-Building Initiative with Diverse Communities

A new initiative in Dortmund is working to build trust between the police and diverse communities. On August 1, 2024, the police presidency launched a Center of Competence for Dialogue and Trust-Building in a Diverse Society. The move follows a cooperation agreement signed with 13 local organisations in June to tackle issues like racism and police interactions with vulnerable groups.

The center was created to address challenges such as racial profiling, mental health crises during police encounters, and youth engagement. Police President Gregor Lange has highlighted the importance of collaboration between law enforcement and civil society to strengthen trust in democratic institutions.

The initiative reflects a structured effort to improve relations between the police and marginalised communities. Through ongoing forums, conferences, and direct collaboration, the programme aims to create lasting change. The success of these measures will depend on sustained participation from both law enforcement and civil society partners.
