Dortmund Welcomes Back Fireworks for a Safer New Year’s Eve Celebration
Dortmund’s New Year’s Eve celebrations will return with a news twist this year. For the first time since 2022, the city’s official party will include news—though only as part of the central event. Mayor Alexander Kalouti will lead the countdown, marking a change from previous years when safety and environmental debates kept pyrotechnics off the programme.
The city has hosted a centralised New Year’s Eve gathering at Friedensplatz for the past three years. The event offers a safe, organised space for residents, with music and entertainment running late into the night. In recent editions, fireworks were banned entirely, replaced in 2024/25 by a laser show.
The 2025 celebration will blend tradition with caution. Fireworks return under tight restrictions, while the event keeps its focus on community and safety. With music, a laser show, and the mayor’s countdown, Dortmund aims to offer a lively but controlled start to the new year.
