Dortmund's Foodsharing Event Rescues Over 5 Tons of Food, Calls for Action
Dortmund's foodsharing branch recently hosted a significant event on Peace Square, aiming to raise awareness about food waste. The event, supported by the city's waste disposal company EDG, saw over 5 tons of rescued food displayed and distributed to the public.
The event, held in front of the town hall, featured interactive activities for visitors. A 'smoothie bike' allowed participants to make their own drinks, while educational stations taught children about the value of food. Despite the absence of local representatives, the event was deemed a success due to public engagement and educational work.
The highlight was a large food distribution, with each guest able to fill cloth bags provided by EDG with rescued food to take home. Dennis Görlich, chairman of foodsharing Dortmund e.V., was astonished by the amount of rescued food, highlighting the scale of food waste in Dortmund. Foodsharing Dortmund plans to hold similar events regularly, emphasizing the importance of the topic and the success of the first event.
The event, which saw over 400 boxes of rescued food presented, was a call to action for local decision-makers to address food waste. Foodsharing Dortmund suggests that the responsibility for measures to combat food waste lies with local government authorities and relevant municipal organizations.
