TU Dresden remains an Excellence University - Dresden University Retains Elite Status in Germany's Excellence Strategy
The Technical University of Dresden (TUD) will keep its title as a University of Excellence under Germany's Excellence Strategy. This decision follows a review by the German Council of Science and Humanities and the German Research Foundation. The university has held the prestigious status since 2012 and secured permanent funding in 2019.
The latest assessment checked whether ten institutions still met the funding criteria. TUD's success ensures continued support for its research clusters and academic growth.
TUD leads five of Saxony's six Excellence Clusters, with three managed independently and two in collaboration with other universities. These clusters have become a magnet for top international researchers, attracting nearly twice as many foreign scientists as other fields.
From 2026, the six clusters will receive around €200 million in federal funding over seven years. The state of Saxony will also contribute co-financing, ensuring long-term stability for cutting-edge research. Rector Ursula Staudinger thanked the university community for their efforts over the past decade. She described the achievement as a source of pride, reflecting years of hard work and progress. Saxony's Minister-President Michael Kretschmer (CDU) called the result a 'triumphant success'. He emphasised Dresden's growing reputation as a global leader in academic and scientific innovation.
The funding decision secures TUD's position as one of Germany's top research institutions. The university will continue to receive federal and state support for its Excellence Clusters. This will help maintain its ability to attract leading researchers and advance high-level scientific work.
