Drunk driver arrested after reckless Berlin police chase ends in bushes
A drunk driver was arrested in Berlin's Friedrichshagen district after a dangerous chase early this morning. Police intervened when the man, behind the wheel of a Smart car, refused to stop and instead sped away along Bölschestraße. The incident began when officers noticed the vehicle swerving erratically into oncoming traffic. The driver also endangered pedestrians before nearly colliding with a BVG bus. Instead of pulling over, he accelerated and eventually abandoned the car in Werlseestraße.
Police quickly located the man hiding in nearby bushes and took him into custody. A voluntary breathalyzer test showed a blood alcohol level of around 1.5 per mille. His driver's license was confiscated, and his vehicle was impounded. The suspect was later released but remains under investigation. The case has been referred to the Traffic Offenses Unit of Police Directorate 3 (East). Under German law, fleeing police can lead to additional charges, including failure to render assistance or obstruction of justice. Penalties for such offences often range from three to ten years in prison, depending on the severity and whether accidents occurred.
The driver now faces prosecution under traffic laws, with potential penalties including fines, license suspension, and imprisonment. Berlin police continue to enforce strict measures against drunk driving and dangerous evasion attempts.
