Drunk Driver Causes Serious Berlin Crash, Closes Major Road
A serious car crash in Berlin-Niederschöneweide on Saturday evening left several people injured and caused significant traffic disruption. The 46-year-old driver, who was later found to have a high blood alcohol level, lost control of his vehicle at the intersection of Michael-Brückner-Straße and Sterndamm.
The driver's car veered over the median, tearing down a traffic sign and two poles of a traffic light, and flipped multiple times before coming to a halt about 50 meters away. Debris from the traffic light hit an oncoming truck and a motorcycle, damaging them. The 46-year-old driver suffered severe injuries and was transported to a hospital for intensive care. The police seized his driver's license due to his high blood alcohol level, around two promille.
The 30-year-old truck driver sustained cuts from glass fragments and was taken to a hospital for treatment. A 28-year-old motorcyclist was also hit but declined medical treatment. Michael-Brückner-Straße was closed in both directions for accident investigation and rescue operations, affecting BVG bus lines that run along this route. Photos from 'B.Z.' showed the crash site resembled a debris field, with the truck's body torn open and the road covered in debris.
The accident resulted in several injuries and significant traffic disruption. The driver's high blood alcohol level was a contributing factor. The police are investigating the incident.
