Drunk driving suspected after BMW crashes into Peugeot, injuring three near Burgsteinfurt
Three Injured in Collision on Burgsteinfurt Dam in Neuenkirchen
A traffic accident on Burgsteinfurt Dam in Neuenkirchen on Friday evening (March 27, 2026) at around 8:20 p.m. left three people with minor injuries. A 40-year-old BMW driver from Rheine was traveling along Burgsteinfurt Dam toward Steinfurt when, near the Dorfbauerschaft area, he rear-ended a Peugeot traveling ahead. The Peugeot was occupied by two people from Lünen—a 73-year-old driver and a 71-year-old passenger. The impact caused both vehicles to leave the road. The BMW struck the wall of an adjacent barn, while the Peugeot veered into nearby shrubbery.
Firefighters freed the two occupants from the Peugeot, and they were subsequently taken to a hospital with minor injuries.
The BMW driver initially fled the scene on foot but was later located nearby with the assistance of a police helicopter. The man, who also sustained minor injuries, was taken to a hospital. After officers detected the smell of alcohol on his breath, a blood sample was taken, and his driver's license was confiscated.
The collision caused a large hole in the barn wall, compromising the building's structural integrity. A contracted company secured the damaged wall to prevent further hazards.
Burgsteinfurt Dam (L580) was completely closed in both directions until 10:45 p.m. while authorities investigated the accident and cleared the road.
The total cost of property damage has not yet been determined.
Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.
