Drunk man attacks off-duty police officer in Berlin supermarket brawl
A 54-year-old man was arrested after assaulting an off-duty police officer in a Berlin supermarket on Wednesday evening. The incident took place in the Wilhelmstadt neighbourhood, where the suspect had already caused disturbances earlier that night.
The trouble began when the man harassed customers and threw coins at the checkout. Staff asked him to leave, but he refused and threatened to return. About an hour later, he came back and became aggressive again.
An off-duty officer, who identified himself as police, tried to intervene. The suspect then punched him in the face, leaving the officer with facial pain. Despite the injury, the officer did not seek medical attention. The suspect was taken into custody due to the ongoing risk he posed. A breathalyser test showed his blood alcohol level was 0.73 per mille. He was released the following morning but now faces charges of assaulting a law enforcement officer and offensive behaviour. Witnesses confirmed the suspect had caused earlier disruptions in the same store. Police have not disclosed his identity, and no prior incidents involving him at the supermarket have been reported.
The investigation into the attack remains active. The suspect’s blood alcohol level and aggressive behaviour led to his temporary detention. Authorities will determine the next steps in the case.
