Drunken man attacks two with a shovel in Berlin’s Mitte district
A violent incident unfolded early in Berlin’s Mitte district when a 33-year-old man attacked two people with a shovel. The assaults took place near Alexanderplatz, leaving one victim injured and a parked vehicle damaged.
The suspect first targeted a 32-year-old employee of Berlin’s municipal cleaning service, BSR, striking him with the shovel. The victim escaped without injury but reported the attack to police. Officers later found a white van with damage to its passenger side, likely caused during the same incident.
The man then turned on a 44-year-old witness who was sleeping under an S-Bahn underpass. Without warning, he assaulted the bystander, leaving him with pain in his leg, finger, and stomach. Despite the injuries, the witness refused medical attention. When arrested, the suspect underwent a breathalyser test, which revealed a blood alcohol level of nearly 0.2%. Police took him into custody and handed the case to the specialised investigative unit of Police Directorate 5 for further action.
The 33-year-old remains in police custody as investigators examine the circumstances of the attacks. The 44-year-old victim, though hurt, chose not to seek treatment. Authorities continue to probe the incident under the jurisdiction of Berlin’s City Directorate.
