Duisburg crackdown shuts down illegal bars and betting shops in major raid
A joint operation in northern Duisburg targeted illegal businesses on Wednesday evening. Authorities inspected ten premises, including betting shops, unlicensed bars, and kiosks. Two businesses were forced to shut down immediately after violations were uncovered.
Police and city officials checked 105 people during the raid. In a betting shop, a 61-year-old man with an Albanian passport was found and suspected of living in Germany without permission. He was taken into temporary custody.
An illegal slot machine was seized in a bar on Reinerstraße. Officers also confiscated hashish after a 21-year-old man tried to flee with several hundred grams of the drug. The operation led to four criminal complaints, covering illegal residence, cannabis offences, copyright breaches, and illegal gambling. Duisburg officials issued three fines, including for violations of youth protection laws. The crackdown followed concerns over unregulated businesses operating in the area.
The operation resulted in two immediate closures and multiple seizures. Authorities continue to investigate the suspected offences. Further action may follow depending on the findings.
