Duisburg’s Mayor Leads New Push for Ruhr Region Unity and Influence
Sören Link, Lord Mayor of Duisburg, has taken on a new role as spokesperson for the Regional Association of Ruhr (RVR). His election marks a push for stronger collaboration across the region. The Municipal Council, made up of local leaders, aims to highlight the Ruhr’s strengths and push for greater influence in politics and business.
The council brings together the lord mayors of 11 major cities, including Dortmund, Essen, and Bochum, along with district administrators and RVR’s Regional Director. They meet up to eight times a year to align strategies and represent the Ruhr’s interests. Garrelt Duin, the RVR’s Regional Director, stressed the need for closer coordination to advocate effectively in Düsseldorf, Berlin, and Brussels.
With Link at the helm, the Municipal Council will focus on practical steps to boost the Ruhr’s profile. Their efforts include tighter political lobbying and cross-sector projects. The goal is to turn the region’s ambitions into measurable progress in science, industry, and community growth.
