Duisburg's Olympic Dream Hangs on a Postal Vote by April 14

Duisburg's residents will soon decide on the city's role in a major Olympic bid. A citizens' referendum is underway to gauge support for joining the Rhine-Ruhr region's push to host the 2036, 2040, or 2044 Games. Ballot papers will arrive by post starting March 16, with no need for voters to apply.

The referendum covers Duisburg's participation in a joint bid by 17 cities across the Rhine-Ruhr region. Led by Köln, the group includes Aachen, Bochum, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, and 12 others, plus Kiel or Warnemünde for sailing and Markkleeberg for canoe slalom. Voters face a simple choice: answer 'Yes' or 'No' to the question, 'Do you support our city's participation in the Rhine-Ruhr region's joint bid to host the 2036, 2040, or 2044 Olympic and Paralympic Games?'

All 351,307 eligible voters will receive their materials by March 23. Those who do not get theirs by then should call the Electoral Office on (0203) 283-987733. Completed ballots must go into a Deutsche Post mailbox no later than April 14. The votes will be counted on April 19. More information on the bid and referendum is available at www.ourwebsite.de/olympic_bid.

The outcome will determine whether Duisburg moves forward with the regional bid. Results are expected on April 19, after all postal votes have been processed. The decision will shape the city's involvement in one of Germany's largest Olympic ambitions.
