Düren County Considers Reintroducing Daycare Fees Amidst Debt Concerns
The county of Düren is set to discuss the reintroduction of daycare fees today, with the Youth Welfare Office Parents' Council expressing feelings of deceit due to a change in political stance. The current free childcare system, in place since 2018, may see changes from August 2026.
The district council of Düren is deliberating a proposal to reintroduce childcare costs, which was earlier rejected by the council. This shift comes amidst rising debt in the county and a potential policy change with the incoming county council and commissioner on 1 November.
The new system, slated for August 2026, will implement graduated contributions based on parental income and care duration. Currently, only parents earning over 120,000 euros annually pay for daycare. The reintroduction could generate several million euros in revenue for the county.
The Cologne Regional Government has requested a statement on the regulation change by 23 October. With the county council discussing the fee reintroduction today, the future of daycare costs in Düren remains uncertain, leaving parents and the Youth Welfare Office Parents' Council awaiting further developments.
