Düren's train station to undergo €25 million modernisation into a vibrant city hub
Düren's main train station is set for a major transformation after a recent meeting between city officials and Deutsche Bahn. The €25 million project aims to turn the station into a modern hub, blending transport, business, and community spaces. Plans also include short-term upgrades to address current issues like cleanliness and security.
Mayor Frank Peter Ullrich hosted the discussions with Deutsche Bahn and local representatives. The focus was on renovating and expanding the station into a multifunctional building as part of the Düren Innovation Quarter. Funding of around €17 million is expected, with a formal application due in 2026.
The project involves the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the city, and Deutsche Bahn. Alongside the station's redesign, talks covered the integration of the Rurtalbahn regional rail service. A full corridor renovation of the railway line is also planned for 2029.
Before the major work begins, smaller improvements will take place. These include more frequent cleaning, extra security patrols, and minor repairs to the station's structure. The current station has accessible features like three elevators, 76 cm-high platforms, and weather protection, but lacks a DB information desk, mobility services, or escalators.
The meeting marked a step toward modernising Düren Hauptbahnhof. Short-term fixes will address immediate concerns while long-term plans reshape the station into a key part of the city's future. The collaboration between authorities and Deutsche Bahn aims to balance progress with the daily needs of passengers.
