During a Boeing journey headed for Munich, an engine unexpectedly malfunctions.

On July 25, 2025, a United Airlines Boeing 787 Dreamliner, flight number 108, encountered a critical engine failure during its flight from Washington Dulles International Airport to Munich.

The pilot declared an emergency shortly after takeoff, reporting "Engine failure, left engine, United 108 declaring an emergency. Mayday, mayday, mayday." The distress call was confirmed by air traffic control audio and flight tracking data.

Following the failure, the flight crew held the plane at 6,000 feet to safely dump fuel and then made an emergency return and safe landing back at Washington Dulles. The aircraft, with all 219 passengers and 11 crew members aboard, deplaned normally, and there were no reported injuries.

The cause of the engine failure was described as a mechanical issue, but the specific technical reasons were not publicly specified. The Dreamliner had to circle a few times over Washington Airport before returning due to being too heavy for landing due to fuel.

The incident did not occur over the Atlantic, contrary to some reports. The details of the engine failure and the subsequent response by the pilots were reported by the New York Post. However, the pilots' radio calls during the emergency were not reconstructed by the YouTube channel "You Can See ATC" in this specific instance.

United Airlines has not yet provided any details about the technical problem with its aircraft. The Dreamliner, after landing, was towed off the runway due to engine damage. The flight, which typically has a duration of approximately eight hours, had to return to its departure airport for emergency measures.
