Dutch Snack Bar Owner Backs Wilders Ahead of Elections
Hans Schreurs, a prosperous 66-year-old snack bar owner in Venlo, is voicing his concerns ahead of the Dutch parliamentary elections. Known locally for his deep-fried breaded eggs, Schreurs believes the Netherlands is 'too full' and plans to vote for Geert Wilders' far-right Party for Freedom (PVV) in the upcoming election day.
Schreurs, who owns his home and has a thriving business, is worried about competition for his grandchildren's prosperity. He believes immigrants pose a threat to their future. His support for Wilders is not surprising, given the PVV's right-wing populist, anti-Islam, and anti-immigration stance. Wilders and the PVV are expected to remain the strongest political force after the elections, but stable majority formation is uncertain due to other major parties ruling out coalitions with him.
Schreurs' views reflect a segment of Dutch society that feels overwhelmed by immigration. Despite the PVV's expected electoral success in the polls, the future of the Dutch government remains uncertain, as most parties refuse to work with Wilders.
