Easter travel chaos begins as Germans flood southbound routes

Traffic Jams in Allgäu and Toward Austria/Italy: "Off to the South!" for Many Families

For countless families, today marks the start of the Easter holidays in 10 German states—and the beginning of the exodus south. Whether heading to the mountains for skiing or seeking early spring sunshine in Italy, travelers first face a major hurdle: the border tunnel on the A7 near Füssen.

Forecast: When Can Allgäu Residents Expect Gridlock?

Traffic experts at ADAC warn of heavy congestion as early as today, Friday (March 27). "With Easter holidays starting early, many vacationers are flocking to winter sports destinations," the automobility club reports. Major delays are also expected on Saturday morning (March 28), Maundy Thursday (April 2), and Easter Monday (April 6).

The ADAC highlights particularly congested routes through and south of Allgäu, including the Memmingen motorway interchange, the A7, the border tunnel, and the Fern Pass (B179) between Reutte and Nassereith.

The Brenner Pass may also see bottlenecks. "Construction sites, such as work on the Lueg Bridge along the Brenner Motorway (A13), could further disrupt traffic flow," the experts note. Even minor roadworks along the route can cause noticeable delays.

A7 Traffic Jams: New Restrictions at the Border Tunnel

Travelers heading south today or over Easter must heed a new rule on the A7 north of Füssen: during congestion, drivers must remain on the motorway and are no longer permitted to detour through Füssen, Pfronten, or Nesselwang.

Or rather, they should—because compliance appears spotty. While authorities and politicians have praised the measures, local residents dismiss them as ineffective.
