Economic anxiety fuels Democratic landslide in 2025 US elections

Democrats swept victories in key races across the US, with economic concerns driving voters to their candidates. President Donald Trump's absence from the campaign trail and his focus on the government shutdown were seen as factors in the Republican losses.

In New Jersey, Democrat Mikie Sherrill secured about two-thirds of voters who prioritized the economy, while Republican Jack Ciattarelli won about 6 in 10 voters who considered taxes the top issue. Similarly, in Virginia, about 6 in 10 voters who considered the economy the top issue chose Democrat Abigail Spanberger for governor. The AP Voter Poll suggested that anxiety about the economy contributed significantly to these Democratic victories.

In New York City, Democrat Zohran Mamdani won about two-thirds of voters who considered the cost of living the top issue. Meanwhile, in California, roughly two-thirds of voters who prioritized the economy backed Prop 50. President Trump, who did not actively campaign for his party ahead of Election Day 2025, attributed the Republican losses to his absence from the ballot and the issue of the government shutdown.
