Edcom 2’s push for extended mandate sparks hope for education reform
The Second Congressional Commission on Education (Edcom 2) has played a key role in identifying deep-rooted problems in the country’s education system. Through extensive research and stakeholder engagement, it has highlighted issues like poor learning outcomes, teacher workloads, and infrastructure gaps. Now, calls are growing to extend its mandate to ensure ongoing reforms.
Under the leadership of Executive Director Karol Mark Yee, Edcom 2 conducted wide-ranging consultations and evidence-based evaluations over recent years. These efforts uncovered persistent challenges, including weak student performance, overburdened teachers, infrastructure backlogs, and inefficiencies in teacher training programmes.
The push to extend Edcom 2’s mandate comes as legislators recognise the need for long-term research and oversight. If approved, the measure would allow the commission to keep guiding reforms, with a focus on improving teacher welfare and learning outcomes. The decision now rests with Congress, which is urged to act quickly to maintain momentum in education reform.
