Egelsbach reclaims financial independence after years of state-backed recovery
Egelsbach has regained full control of its finances after years of state support, successfully completing Hesse’s protective shield program and avoiding harsh cuts and debt burdens. The municipality, once under the Regional Council in Darmstadt with €3.4 million of debt taken on by the state, achieved three straight years of balanced accounts between 2017 and 2019. In 2018, Egelsbach joined the Hessenkasse initiative, with the state covering an additional €6.9 million in short-term loans, allowing the town to avoid severe austerity measures and keep facilities like the outdoor pool and Eigenheim community centre open. The municipality also scaled back a planned hike in property tax rates. Regional President Jan Hilligardt praised Egelsbach’s leadership for their financial discipline and cooperation with the Regional Council. With the protective shield process now complete, oversight has returned to Offenbach District, marking the end of a structured recovery for Egelsbach. The town avoided major service cuts and reduced tax increases while clearing its debt under state support, and local officials now manage the budget independently, though broader economic pressures remain.
