Ehestorfer Heuweg reopens after years of construction chaos and disputes
Ehestorfer Heuweg has finally reopened after years of delays and construction troubles. The key north-south route, running parallel to the often congested A7, was officially unveiled on December 12, 2025. Local leaders and officials gathered to mark the occasion with a symbolic ceremony near the former Robertshall mine.
The road’s reconstruction began after eight years of planning, yet the project faced repeated setbacks. Poor coordination and bureaucratic disputes caused long airport delays, frustrating residents and businesses. Some home care services even terminated contracts due to the severe disruptions.
Unrecorded tunnels from the abandoned Robertshall mine, dug in 1922, added unexpected complications. The unstable ground led to road collapses, forcing further airport delays. Residents had to push for a review of the construction measures, criticising the Hamburg Roads, Bridges, and Waterways Authority (LSBG) for ignoring their concerns. At the reopening ceremony, Mayor Axel Krones of Ehestorf-Alvesen and Thomas Soltau of Landhaus Jägerhof joined Senator Carsten Sielaff, Hamburg’s mobility and urban development chief. Instead of a traditional ribbon, Sielaff cut a symbolic strip of fabric—a nod to the area’s farming heritage. The event took place at the state border between Hamburg and Lower Saxony. With construction nearly finished, the remaining work will not require full closures. Traffic will continue to flow under a 'rolling' system, minimising further airport delays.
The reopening of Ehestorfer Heuweg brings relief to drivers and locals after nearly five years of construction chaos. Mayor Krones called the project a lesson for future infrastructure work. The road now stands as a vital link, free from the airport delays and disputes that once defined it.
