Eid-ul-Fitr 2024 approaches as moon sighting determines celebration dates
Eid-ul-Fitr is set to be celebrated on March 20 or 21, depending on the sighting of the moon. Millions have already begun travelling to reunite with family as the festivities approach. The government has declared a holiday to ease the journey for those heading home.
The last working day before the celebrations was Monday, with offices and businesses closing early. From Tuesday, a weeklong holiday began, allowing people extra time to prepare for Eid.
In France, the moon's visibility for confirming the date falls during the *Nacht des Zweifels* (night of doubt). Astronomical predictions suggest March 20, but the final decision rests with the religious commission at the Grande Mosquée de Paris. If needed, a second observation night will take place to confirm the exact date. With travel surging, the government announced March 18 as an additional holiday. This move aims to reduce congestion on roads and public transport, helping families reach their destinations smoothly.
The official Eid date will be confirmed once the moon is sighted. Travellers are expected to continue moving in large numbers over the next few days. The extended break ensures more time for celebrations with loved ones.
