EKD Struggles to Replace Beloved Showman's Pastor

The Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) faces a challenge in finding a successor for Johannes Bräuchle, the beloved 78-year-old pastor who has cared for evangelical showmen, circus people, and puppeteers for 18 years. The regional church in Wuerttemberg is struggling to fill this vital role, leaving fairground operators concerned about losing the church's presence in their culture.

Initially, Reinhard Hoene, a recently retired community pastor in Gaggstatt, was chosen to succeed Bräuchle. However, his appointment was suddenly called into question by a letter from the Stuttgart church council, leaving the future uncertain. The EKD, which has traditionally decided who cares for the showmen, has not yet found a suitable replacement.

Paul Thiel, a 75-year-old fairground operator with 54 years of experience, expressed his concern, along with many others, about the potential loss of the church's presence. They fear that without a dedicated showman's pastor, their culture and homeland may lose an important spiritual connection. The regional church, facing challenges due to church tax losses and a lack of theological successors, is currently restructuring and considering changes in pastoral care.

The search for a new showman's pastor continues, with no specific candidates or appointments announced yet. Fairground operators hope that the regional church will find a solution that respects their unique culture and ensures the continuity of the church's presence in their lives. The EKD, meanwhile, is working to address the concerns of the Wuerttembergers, who are considered the most important financiers of the church.
