Elderly couple loses life savings in cruel phone scam operation
Police have detained a 43-year-old man suspected of involvement in a phone scam targeting an elderly couple. The incident unfolded after officers stopped his vehicle at the Offenbau rest area, where they discovered a large amount of cash. Authorities believe the man played a role in deceiving an 80-year-old pair from Neuburg an der Donau.
The scam began when unknown callers contacted the elderly couple, pretending to be a relative in urgent need of money for medication. Convinced by the deception, the victims handed over a mid-five-figure sum in cash. They only realised they had been tricked after speaking with the supposed sick family member later.
Officers grew suspicious when they observed the man driving erratically near the rest area. A subsequent vehicle check revealed a significant amount of money, linking him to the fraud. Investigators now suspect he acted as an accomplice in collecting the stolen funds.
The detained suspect remains in custody as police continue their investigation. The elderly victims, both in their 80s, have been left without the substantial sum they were coerced into handing over. Authorities are reviewing the case to determine whether further charges or connections to other scams exist.
