Elderly Woman Loses Life Savings to Fake Detective in Elaborate Scam
A 66-year-old woman from Radevormwald fell victim to a sophisticated scam after receiving a call from a fraudster posing as a senior detective. Over several days, the imposter convinced her that her assets were under threat and needed protection.
The scam began when the woman answered a call from a man claiming to be a high-ranking police officer. He told her that her savings were at risk and must be placed in protective custody for a few days. She spoke with the fake officer multiple times, growing increasingly concerned about her financial security.
On Wednesday, the woman withdrew a sum of money from her bank. She told a bank employee that the funds were for home renovations, likely to avoid raising suspicion. Later, a man in his mid-30s collected the cash from her near the village of Altenhof. The fraudster maintained contact throughout the process, ensuring the woman followed his instructions. Authorities have not released details on how many similar cases involving fake police officers have occurred in North Rhine-Westphalia over the past year.
The woman's money was handed over to the scammer, who remains at large. Police are investigating the incident but have yet to recover the stolen funds. Residents are advised to verify the identity of anyone claiming to be an officer before taking action.
