Ellenwood’s data center debate erupts as county delays key vote until December

A heated debate over a proposed 1-million square foot data center in Ellenwood has led to delays in DeKalb County’s decision-making. The Zoning Committee postponed a vote on new development rules until 16 December, sparking frustration among residents and activists. Protests and clashes erupted during the meeting as tensions rose over the project’s potential impacts.

The county has been reviewing the data center proposal since June, working with stakeholders to assess its effects. The plan involves constructing a massive facility on 95 acres, but critics argue more research is needed on health and environmental risks.

Outside the county headquarters, around two dozen demonstrators gathered, demanding stricter regulations. Inside, tensions flared as some attendees chanted ‘Let the people speak’ and were escorted out by security.

Commissioner Ted Terry opposed the delay, pushing for a public hearing instead—but his motion failed. He defended the existing proposal, insisting the county’s rules already limit harm to the community. Meanwhile, Oliver Dilligard, a resident living just 100 feet from the planned site, is now considering moving due to concerns over noise, pollution, and property values.

The local NAACP chapter also weighed in, urging commissioners to reject the current regulations. Their opposition adds to growing pressure on officials to rethink the project’s approval process.

With the vote now pushed to mid-December, the county faces mounting calls for further study and public input. The postponed decision leaves the future of the Ellenwood data center uncertain, as residents and advocacy groups continue to push for stronger safeguards. Officials must now balance development plans with community concerns before moving forward.
