A Dubious Week for SKY Airline: Another Emergency Landing
Emergency landing repeated for military aircraft SCAT within a week's timeframe.
Once again, SKY airline finds itself in the spotlight following an emergency landing. This time, it was at Atyrau Airport during a flight from Atyrau to Almaty. The incident occurred when one of the onboard systems overseeing cabin pressure and temperature went awry. Recognizing the issue, the pilot promptly decided to return to Atyrau.
According to the airline, out-of-town passengers were given accommodations, food, and transportation upon reaching Almaty. Almaty.tv reported on the incident.
Peter Griffiths, General Director of JSC "Civil Aviation Committee of Kazakhstan", shared some insights. He revealed that the culprit was a faulty valve. After replacing it, the aircraft returned to Almaty for a safe landing. Griffiths also addressed a separate matter concerning a bird strike at Atyrau Airport, expressing awareness of the issue due to the prevalence of large birds in the area. He mentioned that specialists are actively working on measures to deter these birds.
In collaboration, they are currently developing a joint project to tackle this issue head-on.
It's important to note that an incident similar to this occurred earlier within the same airline. On November 11, a plane, also flying from Atyrau to Nur-Sultan, collided with a flock of birds. There were 115 passengers on board, yet fortunately, no one was harmed.
According to data, airports in Almaty, Nur-Sultan, Shymkent, Atyrau, and Aktobe experienced the highest number of bird strikes during 2019-2020. To address this issue and prevent future incidents, airports need to be equipped with modern ornithological equipment, and the effectiveness of their ornithological flight safety programs needs to be improved. The Civil Aviation Administration of Kazakhstan is responsible for supervising these enhancements.
Before this incident at Atyrau Airport, it was previously reported that measures were taken at Almaty Airport to deter birds before a plane takes off.
Insight:
While detailed information about the measures Kazakhstani airports are taking to prevent bird strikes may not be widely available, certain strategies, such as wildlife management plans, airport design that minimizes bird habitats near runways, pilot training, air traffic control coordination, and regular aircraft maintenance, are common worldwide approaches to reduce bird strikes.
