Emergency talks tackle food security as Iran tensions disrupt supply chains

An Emergency Committee meeting was convened to address growing concerns over food security and market stability. Chaired by Minister of Commerce and Industry Osama Boodai, the session brought together 15 government and private-sector representatives. The discussions focused on safeguarding food supplies as regional tensions escalate.

The gathering examined the obstacles food companies currently face in transporting and delivering their products. With supply chains under pressure, participants explored ways to guarantee uninterrupted food distribution across the country.

The urgency follows wider economic strains tied to the ongoing Iran conflict. US and Israeli strikes, alongside potential blockades of the Strait of Hormuz, have pushed European energy prices higher. Inflation has risen by at least one percentage point, raising fears of stagflation—a mix of stagnation and inflation—if supply chains weaken further. Experts warn this could force the European Central Bank into difficult decisions.

Europe's response has been uneven. Germany advocates a harder line against Iran's regime, while Spain opposes such measures. The UK has limited base access in the region. Meanwhile, the EU is tightening defence-industrial cooperation and reducing reliance on China for critical technologies. These shifts highlight deeper geopolitical divisions within the bloc.

Against this backdrop, the committee's priority was clear: prevent disruptions to food supplies. Concrete steps were discussed to reinforce strategic reserves and streamline distribution networks.

The meeting concluded with a commitment to maintain steady food availability despite regional instability. Authorities and businesses will now implement the agreed measures to shield consumers from shortages. Further reviews are expected as the situation develops.
