Emmendingen Honored for Commitment to Remembrance and Humanity
Emmendingen has been recognized for its outstanding commitment to remembrance and humanity. The city received the merit medal from the Israelite Religious Community of Baden at the New Year's reception in Karlsruhe's town hall.
The award honoured Emmendingen's involvement in the 'AG Gurs' initiative, which maintains the deported persons' cemetery in southern France and organizes annual memorial events there. The city's long-term engagement in preserving the memory of Jewish deportees and honouring the victims of National Socialism was highlighted.
Mayor Stefan Schlatterer accepted the medal on behalf of the city. He previously served as spokesperson for the initiative and most recently commemorated the victims in Gurs in 2023. Emmendingen has been a member of the initiative since 2000, focusing on involving young people. Student groups from Baden, the Palatinate, and Saarland regularly participate in the memorial trips organized by Emmendingen.
The merit medal is a testament to Emmendingen's dedication to remembrance and humanity. The city's commitment to preserving the memory of the past and involving future generations is commendable. This recognition serves as an encouragement for Emmendingen to continue its important work.
