Southwest Airlines is in the thick of refitting all its Boeing 737s with state-of-the-art technology to beef up runway safety.

Thanks to SmartRunway and SmartLanding, courtesy of Honeywell's Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System, over 700 Southwest aircraft have already been equipped. Yeah, that's right—the same Honeywell tech that keeps your modern whip from scraping other motorists during close calls!

According to Honeywell's brass, SmartRunway and SmartLanding put a shine on flight crew knowledge during taxi, take-off, and landing by providing audible and visual cues and steering crews toward stabilized approaches. The system also wakes pilots if they're scorching the pavement, veering too high, or aiming for the wrong runway, thwarting a chain reaction that could culminate in a disastrous brawl on the tarmac.

So, what's the deal with Southwest, you ask? well, there've been more than a few narrow escapes at U.S. airports, and the SmartRunway and SmartLanding systems are the airline's attempt to add even more barriers to any potential disasters.

The fiasco unfolded just after the National Transportation Safety Board unveiled a preliminary report suggesting that blinding sunshine might've played a role in a near miss involving a Southwest Airlines jet at Chicago Midway International Airport in February. Yikes!

Fortunately, Southwest Airlines knew a thing or two about weathering the storm. Jim Currier, president and CEO of Honeywell Aerospace Technologies, remarked, "Today's pilots face a gauntlet with unpredictable weather and dense traffic in limited airspace, forcing them to make split-second decisions during takeoff and landing." Thankfully, innovation marches on, and Currier has high hopes that the next generation of technology will provide real-time information right when the pilots need it.
