Enlargement of Norwegian Air Ambulance's H145 Helicopter Fleet
Norwegian Air Ambulance Expands Fleet with Five-Bladed H145 Helicopters
The Norwegian Air Ambulance has chosen to enhance its fleet with two new five-bladed H145 helicopters, a decision driven by the helicopter's impressive performance in HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Medical Services) operations.
The Norwegian Air Ambulance Foundation was the first operator in the world to take delivery of a five-bladed H145 in 2020, marking a significant step forward in the organization's mission to save lives across Norway.
The new version of the H145 light twin-engine helicopter features a five-bladed rotor, increasing the useful load by 150kg (330 lbs.). This design reduces noise and vibration, improving patient comfort and crew endurance during missions. It also enhances lift performance and maneuverability, crucial for flying in challenging environments common in air ambulance operations.
Equipped with the Helionix digital avionics suite, a high-performance 4-axis autopilot, and full authority digital engine control (FADEC), the H145 offers advanced cockpit technology that improves situational awareness and flight safety. This technology potentially includes integrated e-copilot functions, reducing pilot workload and increasing mission reliability.
The H145's cruise speed of approximately 155 knots and a range of around 475 nautical miles allow for rapid response and the ability to cover considerable distances without refueling, making it ideal for life-saving missions.
The H145 platform supports various configurations and equipment tailored for medical emergencies, such as space for medical personnel, patient stretchers, and specialized life-saving gear. Its robust design and operational versatility have earned it a strong reputation worldwide in emergency medical services, law enforcement, and search and rescue.
Airbus Helicopters, the leading provider of helicopters to the air medical transport industry, providing about 54% of the 2,700 EMS helicopters flying worldwide, continues to be the choice of the Norwegian Air Ambulance. Thomas Hein, Head of Europe Region at Airbus Helicopters, has expressed gratitude for the trust placed in their helicopters, recognising the vital role they play in the Norwegian Air Ambulance's life-saving missions.
In summary, the five-bladed H145 helicopter combines superior rotor design, advanced avionics, excellent cruise performance, and multi-mission capability, making it highly suitable for life-saving missions like those conducted by the Norwegian Air Ambulance.
The Norwegian Air Ambulance's expansion into the industry is not limited to the healthcare sector, as they also invest in new technology with the acquisition of five-bladed H145 helicopters. Moreover, the Norwegian Air Ambulance Foundation's alliance with Airbus Helicopters, a significant player in the aerospace and finance sectors, underscores their commitment to advanced and reliable aircraft for their critical missions.
