Entrepreneur Michael Hayman takes helm at British Chambers of Commerce

Michael Hayman has been elected the new chair of the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC). The entrepreneur and author will now lead a network representing over 50,000 businesses across the UK and beyond.

The BCC, founded in 1860, has long campaigned on key issues such as transport, intellectual property law, and bankruptcy reform. Hayman takes over from Sarah Howard, who held the position for more than six years.

Hayman brings a strong business background to the role. He co-founded London-based communication consultancy Seven Hills and chaired the entrepreneurs' network at private bank Coutts. In 2011, he also launched StartUp Britain, a campaign supporting new businesses, with backing from then-Prime Minister David Cameron and Chancellor George Osborne.

As the new chair, he will guide the BCC's strategic direction, focusing on business growth, government lobbying, and international trade. The organisation includes 51 accredited chambers in the UK and 75 more worldwide, covering firms that employ six million people.

Hayman's credentials extend beyond business. He holds honorary positions at the University of London, the University of Cambridge, and Queen Mary University of London. His recent MBE award further recognises his contributions to entrepreneurship.

Sarah Howard, the outgoing chair, previously worked as a management consultant at JP Morgan and KPMG. She also led startups in biotech, health, and leisure before her six-year tenure at the BCC.

Hayman's appointment places him at the head of a major business network with deep historical roots. His role will involve shaping policy, expanding trade links, and supporting millions of employees across thousands of companies. The BCC's influence spans both domestic and international business communities.
