Environment Minister Against Overhaul of EU Chemicals Regulation
German Environment Minister Carsten Schneider has spoken out against major changes to the EU’s chemical regulations. Known as REACH, the framework currently balances industry needs with health and environmental protections. His stance aligns with concerns from both the chemical sector and the federal economics minister.
Schneider argues that REACH already provides a solid system for Europe’s chemical industry. He believes it ensures safety without stifling business growth. The minister also recognises the struggles facing Germany’s chemical sector, which is pushing for more stability in regulation.
The German government has set up the Chemie-Dialog (Chemical Industry Dialogue) to address these issues. Meanwhile, Federal Economics Minister Katherina Reiche (CDU) has similarly opposed revisiting REACH. Both ministers share the industry’s cautious view on potential reforms.
Hans Ingels, a senior official at the European Commission, expects proposed REACH revisions to be published in early 2025. Environmental groups have previously criticised delays, noting that the 2024 work programme made no mention of REACH updates. So far, no other public figures have openly opposed the planned revisions.
The German government and chemical industry remain wary of sweeping changes to REACH. With the Commission’s proposals due early next year, discussions will likely intensify. For now, the focus stays on maintaining a stable regulatory environment for businesses and public safety.
