EPA reinstates 170 workers after court overturns illegal Trump-era firings
Hundreds of employees were abruptly dismissed from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) early in the Trump administration. A recent ruling declared the mass firings illegal. Now, nearly 170 of those workers have been invited back to their jobs.
The EPA terminated probationary staff in large numbers shortly after the 2016 election. The move was later challenged in court and found to be unlawful. Justin Chen, president of the American Federation of Government Employees Council 238, condemned the dismissals as illegal, unfair, and scurrilous.
The reinstated employees will resume their roles next month. The EPA’s reversal comes after a court determined the original dismissals were unlawful. The agency has not yet commented on whether further compensation or adjustments will be made.
