Episcopal Church Honors Veterans in Historic First Service

The Episcopal Church commemorated its inaugural churchwide Veterans Day service on November 11, 2022, led by Presiding Bishop Sean Rowe. Bishop Ann Ritonia, bishop suffragan for Armed Forces and Federal Ministries, delivered a stirring sermon, emphasizing the shared experiences of veterans and the significance of their service.

The service, held at the Chapel of Christ the Lord in New York City, was a notable milestone for the church. It was led by the Reverend Katherine Ragsdale, an Episcopal chaplain, who presided over the Holy Communion ceremony. The event also witnessed the commissioning of five new Episcopal chaplains, who will now serve in the U.S. Armed Forces, VA medical centers, and federal correctional institutions.

Bishop Ritonia, who has served in the U.S. Marine Corps and hails from a family with a strong military tradition, reflected on the commonalities among veterans. She noted their shared experiences of camaraderie, bearing burdens, and writing or delivering letters home. The service also included pre-recorded music by military musicians from the Washington National Cathedral, adding a solemn and reverent atmosphere.

The first churchwide Veterans Day service by the Episcopal Church was a befitting tribute to the men and women who have served in America's military. As the church looks ahead to marking the 250th anniversary of military chaplaincy in 2023, it continues to honor and support those who have served, reflecting on their shared experiences and the significance of their service.
