Essen and Tel Aviv strengthen 30-year city partnership in 2025 summit

Essen's Lord Mayor, Thomas Kufen, hosted a delegation of Israeli municipal officials at City Hall on October 28, 2025. The visit aimed to strengthen the long-standing ties between Essen and its sister city, Tel Aviv, and to discuss urban resilience and social cohesion. The Konrad Adenauer Foundation facilitated the invitation.

The city partnership between Essen and Tel Aviv spans over 30 years, with both cities maintaining close relations. Lord Mayor Kufen recalled his 2023 visit to Tel Aviv, highlighting the focus on innovation, digitalization, diversity, and education during that trip. He emphasized the importance of such city partnerships in combating antisemitism and promoting solidarity.

In addition to its partnership with Tel Aviv, Essen is also connected with Grenoble, France, through a partnership that has lasted for over 30 years.

The meeting at City Hall on October 28, 2025, marked a significant step in enhancing the bond between Essen and its sister cities. Both partnerships, with Tel Aviv and Grenoble, contribute to mutual learning and cooperation, fostering urban resilience and social cohesion.
