Essen Cracks Down on Electric Scooter Parking with 54 New Zones
Essen is expanding its electric scooter infrastructure. The city has begun setting up designated parking zones, with the first one inaugurated at Hirschlandplatz by Lord Mayor Thomas Kufen. By the end of 2025, 53 more locations will follow. From January 1, 2026, electric scooter providers must install geofencing in these zones. However, users beware: if an electric scooter is left outside an approved zone, the last user's rental fee will continue to be charged.
The initiative to create these parking zones was accelerated by a decision made on October 29, 2025, by a committee for traffic and mobility. Although the names of the committee members are not publicly available, their decision has significantly sped up the process of establishing these zones. The first zone at Hirschlandplatz was completed on November 6, 2025.
Starting next year, electric scooter providers will be required to equip all designated parking areas with geofencing technology. This will help manage and monitor the electric scooters within the approved zones, ensuring they are parked correctly and not blocking pedestrian paths.
By the end of 2025, Essen will have 54 designated electric scooter parking zones, promoting safer and more organized electric scooter parking. The new geofencing requirement from January 1, 2026, will further enhance this organization, benefiting both electric scooter users and the city's residents.
