Essen's COA Action Week Shines Light on Children in Addiction-Affected Families

Essen took part in the nationwide Children of Addiction (COA) Action Week from February 22 to 28, 2026. The event aimed to highlight the challenges faced by children growing up in families affected by addiction. Organisations across the city offered support, information, and activities for those impacted.

The 2026 COA Action Week focused on making children from addiction-affected families more visible. In Germany, around one in five or six children lives with a parent struggling with addiction, increasing their own risks of developing similar issues or mental health problems.

Essen's programme included a variety of events for children, teens, parents, and professionals. The German Child Protection Association's local branch and the State Specialist Center for Women and Families organised information sessions and interactive activities. The Essen Central Library hosted a picture-book cinema, crafting workshops, and themed book displays at multiple locations, including Papeterie Petersen and Schmitz Junior Bookstore.

An online training session for school staff was also held, led by the city's School Psychological Counseling Service. The week concluded with a film screening of 22 Bahnen (22 Laps) at Kino Astra, presented in partnership with ElsE. Earlier, ElsE had also showcased its work at a NACOA event in Berlin, reinforcing its role in national advocacy.

The COA Action Week has been an annual event in Germany since 2011. While primarily German-led, it has seen participation from other countries, working to raise awareness and connect families with support services.

The week's events in Essen provided resources and visibility for children affected by addiction. Through workshops, training, and public screenings, local organisations reinforced the importance of accessible support. The initiative continues to grow, addressing a widespread but often overlooked issue in communities.
