Essen’s Dark Past: A Free Lecture on Witch Trials and Regional Persecution
A free public lecture on the witch trials in Essen will take place on December 5, 2025. Dr. Claudia Kauertz, director of the House of Essen History/City Archives, will lead the discussion. The event will examine why persecution varied across different regions, using Essen as a key example.
The lecture runs from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the Essen Adult Education Center (Volkshochschule). It will be held in the Small Hall at the VHS premises on Burgplatz 1. Attendees are encouraged to register in advance via www.vhs-ourwebsite under course number 252.1B004N.
The event offers a closer look at how Essen’s witch trials differed from those in neighboring territories. Dr. Kauertz’s talk will highlight the factors behind these variations. Those interested can attend without charge but should secure their spot through the VHS website.
