Essen's Iconic Pedestrian Bridge to Undergo €774,000 Renovation
Essen's city hall has announced a significant renovation project for the pedestrian bridge connecting Kupferdreh and Heisingen across the Ruhr. The bridge, a former railway bridge turned foot and cycle path, is a vital part of the recreation area at the Baldeneysee. The project, budgeted at around €774,000, will address age and weather-related damage, including rotten spots and worn-out wooden construction.
The renovation will comprehensively renew and partly replace the wooden construction with other materials. The new platforms will maintain the bridge's width, not extending beyond the underlying steel construction. The number of viewing platforms will be reduced, and those in the shipping canal area will no longer protrude. The renovation also aims to maintain the foot and bike path around the Baldeneysee and raise the railing to 1.30 meters for bike paths. The bidding process for this project is set to begin soon.
The total renovation of the pedestrian bridge is expected to preserve and enhance the bridge's role in the Baldeneysee recreation area. The project aims to ensure the safety and accessibility of the foot and cycle path for residents and visitors alike.
