Estrel Berlin Earns Top Sustainability Certifications in Landmark Audit
Estrel Berlin has earned two major sustainability certifications from VisitBerlin. The hotel and event complex was recognised as a 'High Performer' during its first dual-certification audit, demonstrating its commitment to environmental and economic responsibility.
The certifications—'Sustainable Meetings Berlin' and 'Sustainable Tourism Berlin'—follow the city’s updated 2023 criteria, which now meet Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) standards.
The path to certification began in 2022 when Estrel Berlin created a dedicated sustainability management role. Since then, the company has rolled out multiple projects to reduce environmental impact, improve social practices, and ensure economic responsibility.
A total of 65 strict criteria were assessed, covering governance, risk management, ecological footprint, social engagement, and economic fairness. The process also checked alignment with international standards, including ISO norms and the German Sustainability Code.
Ute Jacobs, Managing Director of Estrel Berlin, described sustainability as an ongoing process of reflection and progress. She stressed the importance of involving the entire team in finding practical, achievable solutions. Rather than relying on a single department, the company encourages all staff to contribute ideas and take action.
The certification audit rated Estrel Berlin as a 'High Performer', confirming its efforts in ecological, economic, and social transformation. This recognition builds on the hotel’s earlier steps, such as appointing sustainability leadership and launching targeted initiatives.
The dual certification places Estrel Berlin among the city’s leaders in sustainable tourism and events. The company’s structured approach—backed by staff involvement and international standards—ensures measurable progress in key areas. Moving forward, the focus remains on continuous improvement and expanding sustainable practices across operations.
