EU Association Calls for Unity and Reform at Annual Meeting

The Memmingen district branch of the European Union Association recently held its annual general meeting at the 'Zum Schwanen' guesthouse, attended by nearly 40 members. Chairman Burkhard Arnold delivered his annual report, highlighting the dramatic changes in the world due to wars and threats to democracy. He also called for the abolition of the unanimity principle in EU decision-making, stating that 'consensus in Europe no longer exists'.

Arnold emphasized the need for Europe to stand together, become more focused, transparent, and decisive to counter these challenges. He urged greater European independence, enhanced security, and economic competitiveness. The branch's recent activities included participation in the European Competition, a market square event for Europe Day, and a lecture series at the town hall.

Following Mechtild Feldmeier's appointment to the branch's advisory board, Ulrike Freifrau von Castell was unanimously elected as the new auditor alongside Joseph Neudegger. Treasurer Harald Post presented a nearly balanced budget for 2024, confirmed as sound and well-managed by auditor Mechtild Feldmeier. Deputy chair Natalie Riedmiller shared her experience at the ninth Hertenstein Talks in Heilbronn, a forum dedicated to dialogue on Europe's central challenges and future prospects.

The Memmingen branch of the Europa-Union looks ahead to continued engagement and advocacy for European unity and progress. With a balanced budget and active members, the branch is well-positioned to tackle the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
