EU customs seize 152 million fake goods in 2023, exposing safety risks
EU customs seized more than 152 million counterfeit products in 2023. Many of these fake goods failed to meet safety standards, putting consumers at risk. A large share originated from outside the EU, with online sales playing a major role in their distribution.
Last year, around 80% of all seized fakes—about 121.6 million items—came from non-EU countries. China was the primary source, with 67 million counterfeit goods detected through online platforms alone. These products often lacked proper safety certifications or clear manufacturer details.
Customs officers frequently intercept problematic shipments linked to overseas online orders. Many items either violate EU safety rules or arrive without transparent labelling. German customs alone handled over 345 million import declarations in 2024, uncovering numerous unsafe or non-compliant goods in the process. Authorities warn that suspiciously low prices on foreign websites can signal missing safety information. Without proper checks, these goods could end up in the hands of unsuspecting buyers. Customs agencies remain a key line of defence, blocking dangerous or unauthorised products before they reach the market.
The high number of seizures highlights ongoing risks from counterfeit goods entering the EU. Consumers are advised to verify product safety and manufacturer details before purchasing from non-EU online sellers. Customs officials continue to monitor imports closely to prevent unsafe items from circulating.
