EU Regions Unanimously Back Closer Ties With Swiss Cantons

The European Committee of the Regions (CoR) is hosting its plenary assembly in Brussels this week. Among the attendees are 329 elected local and regional politicians from across the EU. Notably, the Conference of Cantonal Governments (KDK) of Switzerland was invited, with Norman Gobbi, President of Ticino's Cantonal Government, representing them.

The assembly, held on Wednesday, saw a unanimous approval of a statement titled 'Strengthening the territorial dimension of relations between the EU and Switzerland'. The regions of the EU expressed their desire to fortify cooperation with Swiss cantons. While specific details about Ticino's or its president's role in future collaborations were not mentioned, Swiss cantons are generally involved in initiatives like Interreg, which foster cross-border cooperation with EU regions.

The statement passed at the CoR's plenary assembly signals a commitment from EU regions to deepen ties with Swiss cantons. Although the specifics of Ticino's or President Gobbi's role remain unclear, their presence at the meeting underscores the importance of this relationship. Future cooperation is likely to build on existing programs, such as Interreg.
