EU stresses press freedom during democratic transition

The European Union (EU) has urged Bangladesh’s interim government to uphold media freedom and protect freedom of expression. Led by Professor Muhammad Yunus, the current administration faces calls to ensure transparency and accountability during the country’s democratic transition.

The EU also reaffirmed its support for legal migration while pushing for stronger measures against human smuggling.

In a recent statement, the EU stressed the need for a free and independent media in Bangladesh. Officials described it as essential for democratic progress, transparency, and holding institutions accountable. The bloc also called on authorities to safeguard journalists and investigative reporting.

On migration, the EU reiterated its commitment to expanding legal pathways for skilled and semi-skilled workers from Bangladesh. It opposed irregular migration and exploitation, urging safer, dignified routes. The EU further encouraged the interim government to include migrant smuggling in the upcoming Prevention and Suppression of Human Trafficking and Smuggling of Migrants Ordinance, 2025.

The EU also partnered with BRAC and Bangladeshi authorities to honour investigative journalism on migration issues. The collaboration aims to highlight reporting that exposes risks and abuses faced by migrants.

The EU’s statements come as Bangladesh navigates political changes under Professor Muhammad Yunus’s interim leadership. The bloc’s focus remains on media freedom, legal migration, and combating human smuggling. These steps are intended to support stability and democratic development in the country.
