EU tightens border security with ETIAS and Entry/Exit System rollout
The European Union is bolstering its border controls with the introduction of two new systems: the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) and the Entry/Exit System. ETIAS, set to launch soon, requires visa-exempt nationals to obtain an electronic travel authorization before visiting Europe. Meanwhile, the Entry/Exit System, fully operational by April 10, 2023, will electronically register non-European nationals' entries and exits.
ETIAS applications will be processed swiftly, within minutes for most applicants, but some may take longer. The authorization will be valid for up to three years or until the passport expires, allowing multiple entries for short-term stays. Applicants can purchase ETIAS online for 20 euros, with exemptions for those under 18 or over 70. Despite ETIAS, border guards will still ask to see a passport and other documents, as it does not guarantee entry.
The Entry/Exit System uses biometric data, including facial images and fingerprints, to verify identities and combat organized crime and terrorism. It applies to visitors with short-stay visas and those who do not need a visa, including many Canadians. The European Commission is responsible for implementing these new security measures.
The ETIAS and Entry/Exit System aim to fortify Europe's border security and simplify travel processes. While ETIAS does not replace the need for a passport, it provides an additional layer of security for both travellers and the EU.
